What is a PBX? How do I know if our phone system is a PBX?

!

PBX is an old term meaning Private Branch eXchange. This simply describes telephone switching equipment located at the customer’s location. In fact, PBXport can work with any telephone that has a removable handset cord, provided there is not a keypad in the handset. We specifically mention PBX compatibility because this is a very unique capability which opens up a world of possibilities for installation applications.

?

How does the audio quality of PBXport compare to a digital hybrid that connects directly to a telephone line?

!

Handset audio quality is typically just as good as a direct phone line equivalent. In fact, we have found that many digital PBX phone sets sound even better than regular phone lines, since larger digital PBX systems connect to the phone company over digital trunk lines. Results may vary, since we cannot claim excellent sound quality through a cheap generic phone set.

?

I see that there are handset jacks on the front and back. Can PBXport handle two telephone connections?

!

No. The front and back handset jacks are there for your convenience. You can however use any combination such as connecting the telephone base to the rear “Phone” jack, then connect the handset coily cord to the front “Handset” jack.

?

Will PBXport work with my __________ phone system?

!

Probably yes. We have to say probably because the handset interface is proprietary and therefore can change from model to model. We have no way of predicting how a phone manufacturer will use the handset wires in the future. The three handset microphone types that we support, electret, dynamic, and carbon, cover every handset microphone type that we have seen in use, but the wire diagrams can change without notice.

?

Can PBXport auto-answer or auto-disconnect?

!

No, the handset cord on your telephone is only active when the handset is off-hook. This is done manually. There is no way to then auto-disconnect. You must return the handset to the cradle when you are done with your call.

?

Does PBXport come with any Talk Show software?

!

No, our reference to a talk show system pertains to using a multi-line PBX phone system as a line selector switch. When PBXport is Online, simply select which phone line you want to talk to, either dropping the last caller, or putting them back on hold.

?

Does the handset remain active when PBXport is Online?

!

When you press the Online button, the handset microphone is disconnected and PBXport sends audio through the handset cord into your telephone. The handset earpiece remains active, allowing you to listen to the audio that is sent into the phone line. A removable jumper inside PBXport allows you to program PBXport to disconnect the handset earpiece audio whenever the unit is Online.
